Why CRAFT?

Context

Following the public’s growing interest in improving the transparency and application of standards within mineral supply chains, the industry has been adopting both voluntary and mandatory responsibility frameworks to supply itself with gold and other minerals

Even so, there are still no widely accepted criteria or procedureson how regulations related to due diligence should be applied in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) supply chains. They do not take highly into account the specific opportunities, conditions and challenges of the sector.

Some responsible supply standards, such as Fairmined, cover much more than due diligence aspectsbecause they are standards with organizational, social and environmental high performance requirements. Moreover, they have an incentive to certificate mines (for example with additional premium).

However, the vast majority of artisanal miners in the world cannot reach nor even begin the process of complying with the requirements of such certificationswithout a significant investment of time, resources, training and support.

This is why the CRAFT Code is presented as a solution to this need.
